The Techno-Fashion Victims – Iphones and Blackberries

May 16, 2008 Italians 9 Comments

The lasted craze amongst the better heeled Milanese is the iPhone. This technological jewel and ultimate expression of cool has only just become available in Italy, semi-officially. A Vodafone shop near us has a few of the things in stock.

However, what the ingenious Italians have been doing is bringing these toys back from the US. Then they have been hacking and cracking the things so they can be used on Italy’s mobile phone networks.  I see the things everywhere. My other half wants one too, and guess what? Yes, she knows someone who heads Stateside quite often. Joe, could you do me a favour??!!

The in-crowd has certainly decided that the iPhone is in. Big time!

On the other hand, those who regard the iPhone as being a bit too trivial (or heavy), and who wish to give the impression that they are switched-on fully connected professionals, go for the mobile phone/always on email manager made by Blackberry.

Blackberry’s are all over the place too. Just the thing for ensuring that you get those all important Hotmail messages as soon as they are written.

I have no doubt at all that there will be a few Italians who have the best of both worlds – an iPhone and a Blackberry.

Funny thing is, that although many here love to have the latest and greatest, all singing (ringing!!) and dancing mobile phone, most people only actually use these fully featured multi-function devices for simply making phone calls.

Enter the techno-fashion victims.

Italy – Armani, Versace, Dolce e Gabbana, Blackberry and iPhone.

Know plenty of these fashion phoners — many with an iPhone for show (they say the only thing it doesn’t really do well is work for calls) and another, constantly ringing second phone for business..

    Hi Nicole,

    Thanks for dropping in.

I see I am not alone in my noticing these iPhone show offs! Not just me then!

Good to hear that the things don’t work, snorts he evilly…

    All the best,

    Alex

  3. I have both of the best worlds in having both of these.. ;-) Thanks for stopping by on my site I shall certainly come back and visit you there are lots of interesting things here, plus we are neighbours, I live in Monza…I’ll add you to my favourites on entrecard, infact I’ll just check how many credits to leave an ad on your site and perhaps I’ll be back quicker than you think..ci vediamo! Ciao :-)

    Hi Aniya,

    Welcome to Blog from Italy.

Lucky you – Blackberry and iPod, you fashion victim you! Have you been having any problems with the little trackball thingy on the Blackberry by any chance. A friend of mine says the things cause problems, and this has put me off Blackberrys a little.

I noted that we are neighbours, I’ll add you as a favourite on my Entrcard system too.

Yep, Entrecard can help you find some interesting sites, as can StumbleUpon.

    A presto,

    Alex

  5. Yes the trackball is very sensitive and mine stopped working within a year. I have the pearl 8100 model, having said that I ordered a trackball from Hong Kong for next to nothing, so if you’re thinking about getting one go ahead they are very reliable apart from that and great for push mail…As to the iPhone personally it’s better for me as all my computers are macs and WP (I see you have too) have just added an application where you can update, add posts and edit your blog, not bad eh..;-)

  6. AlexR says:

    Hi again Aniya,

Thanks for telling me where to get hold of a new Blackberry trackball – useful to know.

The reason I want a Blackberry is for the push mail, and it’s almost real keyboard appeals too, just as the iPhone’s virtual screen keyboard does not appeal to me, and I’ve heard that the iPhone’s keyboard loses sensitivity after a time.

Not being able to change the iPhone’s battery also puts me off the things, even if I could blog to WP using it. Actually, I can blog via email too, so the Blackberry could be used for this if I want to.

    All the best,

    Alex

  7. Yes my other hobby was a mod on the BlackBerry forums so give me a shout if you need any info…and if you ever need another trackball the address is http://cnn.cn/shop/blackberry-81xx83xx88xx-trackball-p-1857.html which model were you thinking of the curve or new bold?

  8. AlexR says:

    Hi yet again Aniya,

Ah, so you were a mod on the BlackBerry forums – useful to know. And thanks for the link.

The model I’d like is the Bold, but I think the Curve would be fine too, especially the GPS version.

I’m going to wait until TIM lists the Bold as available on contract, if it has not done so already. I’ll probably sign up after summer and dump my old Nokia 6680 with its Tre contract in favour of he Bold. Push email will be useful for managing may various web sites.

I’ve replied to your Entrecard message, by the way, and approved your ad, and applied to place my Entrecard on your blog.

    Cheers,

    Alex

Excuse me if I sound completely ignorant as far as technology goes, but my question is this: do you know if there exists now any phone, such as iphone or blackberry, that can be brought to Italy and will function there? (I am in the U.S.)

Did the expression ‘at sixes and sevens’ originate from English speakers who had dealings with Italians? There does seem to be some evidence.
