Speeding fines in Italy, again, and Pisa…

It’s official, the article in the Telegraph I read while I was in the UK would seem to indicate that Euro traffic fines will shortly be with us. The same article is available on-line here.  Although this change comes into effect in March 2007, as some who have read this blog will have noticed, the UK DVLA has already been giving out the addresses of offenders to the Italian authorities so they can send victims a nice little fine.

For some not exactly clear reason a number of people who have left comments on my blog have been ending up with fines for traffic offences whilst driving through Pisa.  If you happen to find yourself there in the near future, watch out, because the area into which certain cars are not allowed does not seem to be well signposted.

Lol, thanks for the warning but I won’t be driving if I find myself wandering in Pisa.

As a kiwi, I drive on the other side of the road … the list of offences I believe I could inadvertently commit while in charge of a vehicle in Italy would see me in prison I suspect.

Happy new year, just by the way :)

Today I just received a letter from hertz detailing a charge made to my credit card for supplying the authorities with my details, so that they can process a fine against me. I was in Italy august 06 ( 5 months ago )Is this legal ? I have just begun to do some research online and found this page. my fine is probably in the post to me , but the information on the bill from hertz says Pisa. I presumed i had been speeding , but after reading this post i now think it was when i was driving around Pisa. I cannot recall taking my car into any restricted zones .

I know in the UK there is a 14 day limit ( more for car rental ) to send a notice of prosecution , followed by 6 month deadline to take you to court.
surley there must be a deadline for this.
If i don’t pay will i be locked up on my next visit to Italy ?
Can anyone shed light on all this?.

    James

I am in a similar position James. I received a letter from the police commando’s in Venice in early February. The thing that surprised me was that the date of the fine was 11th April 2006. It took almost a year to get to me.
I have paid the fine but I had the same thing running through my head. Surely there is a time limit on the sending of these fines.

As for Hertz, I have not had a letter from them and I certainly hope I dont.
