I’m Not Going to Complain

June 23, 2008 Life in Italy 7 Comments

Nope, not this year. I’m not going to subject you to my annual whinge about the horrendous heat here in Milan.

Nor am I going to whine about the temperature shooting from 15°C to 35°C in well under a week.

I won’t complain about not being able to sleep a wink, nor shall I moan about my permanently sweat drenched forehead.

No expostulation from me this year on feeling as though I’m living in a huge sauna. I won’t carp on about how the smothering heat lingers right on through the night either.

I shall desist from mentioning that at around half ten this evening the green pharmacy thermometers were still displaying 30 °C.

Nope, no grouching, no grumbling, no fussing, fretting, griping, groaning or grousing from me this year, on the sweltering temperatures here in Milan.

There, I told you I wasn’t going to complain, and I haven’t.

I have heard on RAI International the temperatures in Italy today. 35 degrees in Bolzano?

Milan was always oppressive in summer, but I remember in my childhood such temperatures were rare. Mainly occurring in August rather than June.

I guess it’s global warming. Since I have been living in Melbourne winters have gone much milder, it basically stopped snowing in the mountains (which at latitude 38 and only about 1500m were ‘marginal’ anyway) and the numbers of days above 30 in summer have increased.

    Hi Guido,

    Welcome to the blog!

Yes, it is hot here – mighty hot. The heat arrived quite late this year. Often it is steamy from mid-May onwards.

Funny you should mention global warming, in fact, if you speak to Italians who have been in Milan for 40 years or so, they will tell you that the climate has almost changed beyond all recognition. For example, in winter Milan was often covered by deep blankets of snow – but no longer, and the heat really only hit around August in Milan – no long the case.

The global warming effect has not just affected Italy, as you have noticed from the changes around Melbourne, and back in the UK summers, especially in the south, are much hotter than they used to be.

    All the best,

    Alex

    Classic!

I shudder to think of what you wouldn’t compalin about if you spent a summer here in Vegas!

    Hi Joe,

“I shudder to think of what you wouldn’t complain about if you spent a summer here in Vegas!”

Yes, I’m sure I’d find plenty to not complain about if I were to pass a summer in Las Vegas! Says he, shuddering.

    Cheers!

    Alex

  5. Andy says:

So glad you’re not complaining, Alex! :-)

Give me this heat anytime. Sure, it is a little humido but not so that I can’t stand it. It makes you move about just a little slower and search for the shade when outside. And, as I remarked to my partner V, yesterday, stepping out of the supermarket or any air conditioned place reminds me of when we used to come from the UK and step off the aeroplane. It’s like being on holiday every day.

    Wonderful.

  6. Lee says:

You posted this 2 years ago, about the time my husband and I arrived in Bolzano. I complained about the heat then and I’ll complain about it now: I did not know before we moved here that Bolzano, which the tourist folks refer to as the co-capital of the Alps, is often the hottest city in Italy in the summer. Today it’s a balmy 36 (at least that was prediction) – and tomorrow high is predicted even hotter. If you like heat and humidity, now’s the time to visit – or if you like to complain about the heat, this is also the right spot. ;-)

    • Alex Roe says:

      Hi Lee,

You are having a good dig around!

I did not think Bolzano would be another hot-spot. Milan is quite well known for its hot and humid summer months, as is Florence. But I thought Bolzano might be a little better. Is it cooler at night?

The thing about Milan is that it never seems to cool down – the nights seem to be about as hot as the days.

Air conditioning can make a difference.

Maybe I should go to Bolzano so I can complain!

      Cheers,

      Alex
