Sant’Eustachio Cafè - Legendary Italian Coffee

May 16, 2008 · Filed Under Rome · 4 Comments

The Sant’Eustachio Cafè down in Rome is something of a legend. This mythical coffee house located in Piazza Sant’Eustachio should be something of a Mecca for all lovers of Italian coffee.

This famous cafe, in which you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with the odd Italian senator or two, is to be found in front of the Italian Senate building, which in turn is pretty close to Piazza Navona and the historic Pantheon.

Most people who visit Rome end up in one or both of these places, so you can add to the Roman holiday atmosphere by popping in for a coffee. Next time find myself in the Eternal City, I certainly shall head for this place, being as I am, a lover of Italian coffee.

The coffee they produce and which is consumed on the premises is also available for export throughout the world. And orders can be made via an email from the cafe’s rather crude website. Still, the website is not the point - it’s the coffee they come for. In a funny kind of way the 50’s style website adds to the charm of the place and its reputation for producing what is possibly the best coffee in Italy.

For those of you desperate for Italian coffee, but lucky enough to be in the USA, Sant’Eustachio’s famous coffee can be ordered directly from the appropriately named ‘Gustiamo.com‘ site.

This coffee is by no means cheap, but then the best things in life never are.

UPDATE

By the way, a real Roman has already written about this place in his ‘Best Espresso in the World‘ post. To get the genuine Roman low down on this place, pop over and have a read. Incidentally, Man of Roma thinks that the best Italian coffee in the universe is to be found in Naples!

Atac Rome!

April 29, 2008 · Filed Under Rome · 2 Comments

No, not literally! ATAC is the Roman equivalent of Milan’s public transport company - ATM.  Like ATM, whose site I talked about in my ‘A useful site, almost - ATM Milan‘ post, ATAC also has a site which allows you to calculate routes around Italy’s capital.

Despite my slightly disparaging comments and owning to my knowledge of Italian, I often use Milan’s ATM site to find out how to get to where I want, so the Roman system should also prove helpful.

You can try out the service by visiting the ATAC site and clicking on the little Union Jack flag in the at the base of the header on the right.

You can even set the date and time of your journey, which means things like summer timetables should be taken into account.

Not sure what ‘private’ and ‘public means’ means.  Maybe if you flag ‘private’ a helicopter will be summoned just for you!  Fun, but probably more costly than a simple bus ticket!

Route planning options include:

  • The quickest with (With what? - possibly refers to the options above)
  • few transfers (Fewest transfers?)
  • few short walks (Fewest short walks - presumably from one stop to another)

Then just choose your point of origin and your destination, hit the ‘Calculate’ button, and see what happens.

The English language is improving, as on the date I wrote this initially, the English language section of the ATAC site was a bit of a mix between Italian and English, now, it’s all in ‘just about’ English.

Let me know how you get on, or if you find yourself going round in eternal circles in the Eternal City.

Happy travelling!

Miracle Players - English Language Theatre in Rome

February 9, 2008 · Filed Under Rome · 1 Comment

If you live in Rome, or are planning to move there for a year or so, are a native English speaker and an actor/actress, then maybe you should take a look at the Miracle Players site.

Here is an except from their About the Group page:

The Miracle Players is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to promote the culture of antiquity in historical locations (with a smile!). The group was formed in May 1999 and has already established a reputation for producing original, funny and quality theatre. The key members are all English-speaking actors, resident in Rome, from America, Australia, England, Iran, Italy and Scotland.
The theatre troupe has already developed a following amongst the English-speaking theatre public in Rome and various associations including the British Council, various private and public schools, the Tourist Board of Rome, Rome City Hall, the Lazio Regional Administration and the Italian Ministry of Culture.
We believe our achievements and success are due to the harmonious blending of the diversity of the members themselves, their shared professionalism and their love for creating and performing.

It looks as though only ‘real’ actors are able to join, but I’m not all that sure about this. I may fire them off a mail and see how they reply. Or you could simply contact them:

Ass. Cult. Miracle Players
