Alitalia the Zombie Airline

A bit like some recalcitrant zombie, Alitalia just will not lie down and die.  The stuttering saga of Italy’s national airline wobbles on, and does not appear to be coming to an end.

The undead Airline which dear old Berlusconi promised to save from becoming, horror of horrors, foreign,

is still as strike prone as ever it was.

Heaven only knows how much it is costing Italy’s taxpayers to save the corpse of this behemoth. Read more

Just the Ticket for Tricky Truckers

Travelling on Italy’s autostrade, or motorways, can be quite an expensive business, for example for truck drivers the cost from northern Italy to to  costs around 70 Euros, but in another classic Italian scam, budget tickets were made available.

Yesterday, Sunday morning, just over 250 heavy goods vehicles or TIRs as they are known here, were impounded by police after the great Italian autostrada ticket fiddle came to light.

A section of Italy’s most in the news at the moment mafia , the camorra, were apparently behind this scam. Read more

Italy’s Education System Reforms

It’s true, Italy’s education system does need to be revised.  Mariastella Gelmini, Berlusconi’s Education minister has come up with a basket of reforms, which on the face of it, do not sound too bad.

However, what appears to be scaring teachers, like Blog from Italy reader Melanie Segal, is the fact that around 83,000 teachers are likely to find themselves without work.

Italy’s school pupils and university students have also been out on the streets protesting against Gelmini’s reforms.  So what is all the fuss about? Read more
