Amalfi by Alfa Romeo

August 11, 2009 Travel 10 Comments

I dug this video up on Youtube, and quite liked it.  It’s a short documentary with a presenter who finds chaotic Naples, dirty, grimy, but vibrant.  She promptly flees the city in her red Alfa Romeo convertible and heads off towards Vesuvius, and then along the winding roads of the Amalfi coastline towards Positano, the emerald grotto, and ends up in the town of Amalfi itself.

Adding to the flavour of the video is the classic Italian Alfa Romeo Spyder which the presenter, Julia, drives.  The pizza and mandolin music is a little clichéd, but what the heck, the views are stunning.   The video is from April 2008, and while it is unlikely that the scenery has changed much, the prices mentioned might well have.

OK, on to the video.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Alfa Romeo

The Amalfi coastline is not a bad spot, as I am sure you will agree, and quite a contrast to frenetic Naples too.  Italy is full of spots which take your breath away.  Fancy a two year holiday in Italy?  It might, just, be enough time to see all that the country has to offer.

Alas, I have not been to Amalfi, but I have been to Naples, which is pretty chaotic, and not one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, well, I did not think so, but then I have seen Rome and Florence.  However, sitting in the sea off Naples is Capri, which is enchanting.  I know, I’ve been there.

One of these days I’ll get round to seeing the Amalfi area in the flesh, and photographing it.

Thanks for sharing this video, I liked it.
I’ve never spent much time in Naples, but we drove through to get to Positano. We absolutely loved the drive(once we were out of Naples), and loved, loved Positano. What a charming town!

      Hi Candi,

Glad you liked the video. I understood that Sting has, or had a place in Positano – so its charm must be universal.

Luckily, I’ve never driven in Naples – not sure I ever want to either!

      All the best,

      Alex

This video makes me want to visit Italy for the first time, buy the Alfa Romeo Spyder, and get some natural sapphires from a Sapphire seller to obtain flamboyance while traveling.

I’m so glad the video makes you want to visit Italy, James.

Well done for your clever little plug – it got spammed, but I ‘cleaned’ it up and posted your comment just the same.

      Best,

Good to hear that you enjoy what I write, Bill. :) Thanks for saying so.

Hope you do make it to Italy one fine day. The only ‘problem’ will be deciding where to go when you get here!

All of Italy’s regions have something worth looking at – if you like breathtaking landscapes, and fancy seeing Venice, then the Venice area would be a fine place to kick off. Then again, for landscapes and sea, Amalfi is one of the most beautiful places in Italy – and could be used as a stop off point for a trip to Sicily – if you holiday was long enough. Two of many possibilities.

On top of the mouth watering views, there is all the food and wine too. The list goes on.

It would be great to hear if you do ever manage to come here.

Best regards, and thanks for reading,

      Alex

The Amalfi Coast is indeed one of the most beautiful drives in, dare I say, the world! I have done it several times in both the public bus and with a private driver. That’s the way to really see it.

While watching the driver in Naples, I found myself wondering how she ever saw so many Vespa or other motorcycle riders with their helmets on. In several trips to Naples, I have never seen this, despite the law.

By the way, I love Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Capri too!! I enjoy your posts on my igoogle page where %90 of the info is about Italy.

    Joan

    • Alex_Roe says:

It does sound as though it is a fun drive, whereas driving in Naples sounds hair raising.

Do you mean you actually saw scooter riders in Naples with helmets on? Wow! Whenever we seen Naples on the news, there is always someone buzzing past without a helmet on! Technically, helmets are required by law in Italy, but Naples’ population has never really had a reputation for obeying annoying little things like laws.

Can you imagine what will happen when federalism kicks in in Italy? Heck knows what will happen in mischievous Naples.

Thanks for commenting and for popping my blog on your iGoogle page!

      Best,

      Alex

  5. Joan Schmelzle says:

I must not have been too clear. I have never seen a helmet on a head in Naples! They are surely free spirited in that town!
    Joan

    • Alex Roe says:

That’s more like it, Joan. I thought that’s what you meant!

It would, however, be a great surprise, for Italians at least, to see those in Naples actually bothering with things like helmets!

No one in Italy is surprised to hear that Naple’s population does not bother respecting laws. They never have, and probably never will. Of course rules issued by those who are members of the big M, will be respected, and enforced too.

      Best,

      Alex
