A useful site, almost - ATM Milan.

If you happen to find yourself coming to Milan, then you may find this site almost useful. It’s a route planner produced by the local public transport company here in Milan, ATM. The link points to the English version of the site, but if you happen to go on a clicking frenzy and want to come back to the route planner page, select the English version and then click on ‘Calculate path’ or ‘Calcola percorso‘, if the English expression magically disappears.

To use the route planner you just put your start address , without ‘Via’, (so ‘Via Torino’ becomes ‘Torino’) in the ‘Da Indirizzo’ field (so much for the English version), plus the street number in the ‘civico’ box and your target address in ‘Ad Indirizzo’ and the street number in the other ‘civico’ box. Hit ‘Avvia il calcolo’ (great English) and hey presto, you will get I nice little map which you can zoom in on and a route plan which tells you which buses/trams/metros you need to get to where you want to go. Only the route plan explanations are all in Italian, which English speakers may be able to follow, but then again, may be not. Hence the title of this post.

Perhaps the link on the site should be re-named to ‘Almost English Version’, so you know what to expect.

Terrifying for this mono-lingual kiwi …

To deal with problems like this while in Rome I found a hotel in the centre, memorised the route ‘home’ and then walked everywhere.

I invested in an A-Z map of Milan when I was first here Di (I spoke zero Italian). It has bus routes, tram routes and the metro. It has proved to be invaluable and I still have it and use it to this day. If I can find another more up to date version which is the same pocketable size, I shall get another one.

    Alexander,

    Try going here: http://www.turismo.comune.milano.it/pls/milano/src?obj=36769&lang=1

It’s a PDF file showing all the public transport routes, surface and underground in Milan - you will need to zoom in to see the details.

    Hope that helps,

    Alex
