Diesel’s Worldwide Dirty 30 party.

September 30, 2008 Italy 7 Comments

I’ve written about the Italian fashion group Diesel before.

Well, it’s Diesel’s birthday, and to celebrate, they’ve produced a promotional video.

Before you go view it though, be aware that it really should have an over 18 rating: … Continue Reading

La Cucina Italiana Soup Contest

September 30, 2008 Food and Wine Friday 4 Comments

Many thanks to those of you who entered Blog from Italy’s soup contest with La Cucina Italiana.

Now I’m going to pass the entries, anonymously, to chief Judge Judith Greenwood of Think on It.  With the help of her fellow judges, Alberta, of La Casa San Martino Agriturismo , and food expert Rowena of Rubber Slippers In Italy,  Judith will make up her mind, and then we’ll send off the recipes to those who are kindly helping out as taste testers.

If all the taste testing goes well, the winners will be announced on Friday the 10th October.

By the way, this weeks food and wine feature will take a look at Italian wine, and introduce you to a system which should help you track down that interesting but elusive red not too far from your very own doorstep.

Disregard for Human Life in Tuscany

September 28, 2008 Italy news No Comments
Lucca, Tuscany

Lucca, Tuscany

How low can you go?  How about ‘adjusting’ the toxic emissions of an incinerator plant?  No, surely this could not happen.

Well, it did down near Pietrasanta not far from picturesque Lucca in Italy.

The fiddle came from the very top and has probably led to increased levels of cancer and other health related anomalies in the area. … Continue Reading

How To Create an Italian tax code – Codice Fiscale

September 27, 2008 Information 7 Comments

The Codice Fiscale is an alpha numeric code which is assigned to all Italians at birth.  Anyone who comes to live and work in Italy will need this code too.  I have one, even though I am not Italian.

Recently a number of readers have been having problems with Italian web sites which require a codice fiscale before certain operations can be carried out.  For example, online stores in Italy may request a codice fiscale before a purchase can be completed.

The trouble is, if you are not Italian, or not resident in Italy, you will probably not have one of these codes.  So here is how to obtain your very own, unofficial, Italian codice fiscale which should work OK with Italian online stores.

Those who need a real codice fiscale will also find instructions on where to go to obtain an offical one.

Making Me Pay

September 26, 2008 Food and Wine Friday No Comments

In response to my scurrilous insinuation that slow food is for old people with time on their hands, and  therefore just not fast enough for us fast moving modern types, Judith Greenwood sent me one of her very quick to rustle up recipes to try.

Alas, this week has been a wee bit chaotic what with the little one being in hospital after his operation, so I have not had time to cook up Judith’s fast slow food based creation.  So I thought maybe someone else may like to have a go.  What follows certainly is a delicious sounding recipe. … Continue Reading

Francesco Cossiga Understood Italy

For those who did not know, Francesco Cossiga, who died the other day, was an Italian politician and one time President of Italy. Cossiga hailed from Sardinia, was a fan of John Le Carre and had earned himself the nickname “the pickaxe” owing to his no holds barred criticism of other Italian politicians.

Berlusconi v Fini – Slinging Old Mud

12 Aug 2010

As you may be aware, the generally tumultus world of Italian politics is in turmoil. The Berlusconi government is teetering on the brink of collapse, but what is really surprising, is that this collapse was sparked from the inside.

Berlusconi Divorces Fini

30 Jul 2010

Kotipizza Berlusconi

From spat to full-blown split. Silvio Berlusconi’s marriage of political convenience to Gianfranco Fini has ended in tears. Scorned lover Berlusconi even rejected Fini’s last minute attempts to kiss and make up and remain part of Berlusconi’s party of love. End of love in. Period.
