Yes, Prime Minister

May 30, 2008 Blogging No Comments

For the uninitiated, which means most of my Italian readers, Yes, Minister was a comedy (as in funny), which appeared on BBC tv in the UK for good few years.

Basically, this wonderful series, which became Yes, Prime Minister ran for a good few years, and can probably be regarded as being British TV as its very best.

A few snippets of these shows are to be found on YouTube, and here is one for your deliction. It’s a famous sketch in which the main British newspapers are summed up. Enjoy:

The thing is, Italy’s horribly sensitive politicians would never let such a scandalous show exist here. Well, I’ve never heard of an Italian equivalent, although I’d love to.

Blind Cheek

The Far Sighted Record Breaker

There is a lovely little story in Milan’s freebie newspaper ‘Epolis Milano‘ today all about a guy down in Taranto who pretended to be blind.

The story gets better, though.

This ingenious chap managed to keep his perfect vision out of sight for twenty four years! I wonder if there is a world record for ‘the longest fiddle ever’.

There is more. This far sighted individual actually used his sightless status to land himself a job as a telephone operator at Taranto prison, of all places. As a result of his far sighted fiddle, he may well end up as a permanent resident in the very same prison.

And yet more. Our blind friend had a driving licence and a big powerful motorbike.

Somewhere along the line, someone must have cottoned on to the fact that for a person registered as blind, he could see pretty well. In fact, Italian police finally caught up with him after he was filmed while reading a newspaper.

End of a possibly record breaking fiddle.

But what of the good doctor who signed our not so blind friend’s medical certificate? Good question. Actually, the doctor concerned is 100% safe from any kind of legal recourse, thanks to the fact that after a certian length of time, you cannot be prosecuted for a crime in Italy.

One does wonder whether the mischievous medic had signed any other dodgy health certificates though. Digging around I imagine investigators could come across a few two-legged one-legged men, and women. A few walking dead, or maybe even the odd deaf piano tuner or two.

More Dodgy Doctors

On the subject of dodgy Italian doctors, a few incidents have made it into the news here recently. How about the 32 Milanese doctors under investigation for having issued prescriptions to those who are now living behind the pearly gates (Or simmering down below)?

Then there was the esteemed ‘prince’ of Italian paediatricians, Carlo Marcelletti, who was arrested for demanding money from the parents of his little patients to, er, accelerate their treatment. This charming quack was then found to have had pornographic images of  what was probably a child on his mobile phone.

To round things off, this price of fiddlers was also, apparently, pocketing money owned to the hospital where he worked and, just for good measure, was probably involved in the manipulation of tenders for work within the hospital.

Ah, the artful dodgers of Italy.

Berlusconi the Wizard 2

May 28, 2008 Funny No Comments

Last week I wrote a post entitled Berlusconi the Wizard about a lovely little cartoon of Berlusconi tackling the Naples rubbish problem in is own inimitable way. Well, I’ve found said cartoon, which appeared in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

It can be seen here on PressDisplay.com – if the link does not take you to the right edition, just use the little calendar to find the 20th May edition of Corriere della Sera. The ‘toon is on the front page, and if you click on said page, you’ll see the full size version.

Actually, the Berlusconi as a wizard theme is used in quite a few of the cartoons appearing on the front page of what is one of Italy’s main newspapers. To see more, have a browse through last and this week’s editions.

Happy chuckles!

The Right Way?

There have been several disturbing reports in the Italian press recently.

First, there was an incident down in Rome in which a gay radio DJ was attacked for, well, being gay. Then, there was the Indian shopkeeper who was threatened and then attacked by, even if reports in the press deny this, what could well have been a racially motivated incident which was inspired by extreme right wing politics.

Next, there was the recent fight at the University of Rome, which, news reports indicate, was provoked by the placement of posters promoting right wing politics.

The above incidents are not all. I keep hearing comments, mainly from those from the south of Italy, that Berlusconi’s cronies are likely to come down hard on those from the south, who are regarded by the likes of Northern League leader Umberto Bossi as being a lazy bunch of wasters.

Yes, there do appear to be those in Italy who are fearful that Italy’s fresh new right-wing government may be showing signs that it leans rather closer to the extreme right than is good for comfort. Those who believe this may well have reason for concern.

In addition to Bossi who has been labelled as being openly xenophobic, Fini, one of Berlusco’s allies, heads a party with fascist origins. Then we have personalities such as Alessandra Mussolini. No prizes for guessing what her political leanings are. I wrote about this lady in my Cashing in on a Brand Name? Not. post way back in March 2005.

The evidence would suggest that Italy’s strongest government in 60 years, may well be its most extreme too.

Italy, it has to be said, has had extreme right wingers in power before, and many times, but this government is different. It has the power to act, whereas similar governments in the past have simply collapsed before they could really become established, and display their true colours.

The thing is, I can understand why those with a potentially heavy hand have been voted into power. Italy and its population do need something of a shake-up, and aside from Berlusconi and co, there was nobody else who was up to the job, with the possible exception of Di Pietro, that is.

However, while the shake-up may well take place, it could well be rather more than many Italian’s bargained for. And certain elements of Italian society are probably justified in feeling rather disconcerted at the moment.

I’ll be keeping an eye on developments, and writing about them, as and when they occur, here. Personally, I hope I won’t have too much to write about….but I have my doubts.

By the way, in northern Italy, summer has yet to really arrive, whereas it has down south. How does the saying go: ‘The sun always shines on the righteous.’.

Manic Monday

May 28, 2008 Work No Comments

Yes, I know Monday is now but a memory, and that it is now Wednesday. But Monday was a fun day!

Why a fun day? Well, aside from the usual stuff, I also made a vulgar suggestion to an artist I had never spoken to before – in Italian, then, after having retrieved the little one from his school, I met up with two American friends, Chris Bright and Sean Carlos for a couple of pints down at the good old 442 – in the company of the 5 year old bundle of energy. To cap it all, in the middle of Monday I received a request for a translation which had to be completed by Tuesday morning.

To cap things off, and just before I was due to collect the little one, it appeared that persons unknown had been trying to hack my Italy is in site, which turn turned added a dose of ‘frenetic’ to what had already been quite a hectic day. In order to block the potential hack and prepare myself for the worst, I whizzed around changing passwords, and making backups, just to be on the safe side.

Then came the news that the Italian mother in law had been admitted to hospital with breathing problems, which caused worries all round. The poor lady is something of a ticking time bomb, and years of chain smoking have left her health somewhat unstable. A great shame, she is a very sweet person.

Despite all the action, I managed to get the translation job finished on time, and the client was quite pleased to discover the nicely formatted, thanks to WordFast, final version lying in her email inbox on Tuesday morning.

As for the vulgar suggestion I made to the artist, who, as I have already mentioned, I had not spoken to before in my life, I am pleased to say that said artist was not the least bit put out by what some artists may have considered a potentially sacrilegious idea. Although I won’t mention exactly what I am up to, you can read more about the idea on my new Italy is in Italian contemporary art site, in this my ‘Art Meets Business‘ article over on Italy is in.

At least the drink down the pub was pleasent, and I was pleased to hear that Chris seems to be getting things sorted out on the looking for a job in Italy front. Sean was in fine form too, and we exchanged geek info about WordPress and he ended up asking me if I really was ‘just’ an English teacher, after I fired off some info about server file permissions (775 for most folders and 644 for most files, incidentally), after I mentioned the attack which appeared to have taken place. Yes, running your own web sites can be traumatic at times.

I finally got to bed at around 2am, think is was. Great, and Tuesday was to prove no less hectic.

Actually the activity of both days left me dog tired, and I ended up collapsing and falling asleep on the sofa with the dog last night.

At least today will be a little less fraught, I hope.

Not All Italian Websites Look So Bad

At the risk of being accused of being a pot calling a kettle black (Yep, I know this blog is getting rather cluttered), I have to say that after doing a little web based research for my latest project, my Italy is in Italian contemporary art site, I’ve come across some rather good looking, and, generally, well written English sections of Italian websites. Well, a family of them actually.

These sites form part of a mini-network run by the Ferragamo family, of the fashion house “Salvatore Ferragamo”. WIth the possible exception of the Viesca Estate site, all of the others are very slick.

I know they are at the top end of the market, but even so, it’s good to see what can be done. OK, so these people have money, of that there is no doubt, but, to their credit, they appear to know how to spend it rather wisely.

I hope they won’t mind too much, but I’ve stolen the list of links to each of these sites and popped them below, so you can have a quick gander, if you so desire.

Francesco Cossiga Understood Italy

18 Aug 2010

For those who did not know, Francesco Cossiga, who died the other day, was an Italian politician and one time President of Italy. Cossiga hailed from Sardinia, was a fan of John Le Carre and had earned himself the nickname “the pickaxe” owing to his no holds barred criticism of other Italian politicians.

Berlusconi v Fini – Slinging Old Mud

12 Aug 2010

As you may be aware, the generally tumultus world of Italian politics is in turmoil. The Berlusconi government is teetering on the brink of collapse, but what is really surprising, is that this collapse was sparked from the inside.

Berlusconi Divorces Fini

30 Jul 2010

Kotipizza Berlusconi

From spat to full-blown split. Silvio Berlusconi’s marriage of political convenience to Gianfranco Fini has ended in tears. Scorned lover Berlusconi even rejected Fini’s last minute attempts to kiss and make up and remain part of Berlusconi’s party of love. End of love in. Period.
