Italian Journalists Worried about Press Freedom

April 16, 2008 · Filed Under Italian politics · Comment

I have it on authority from a source in at least one major newspaper in Italy that journalists here are trembling at the thought of Berlusconi’s new reign. Apparently they are very worried that press freedom will be seriously curtailed under his rule.

One suspects they are remembering what happened the last time the man who would be loved ascended to power.

Will Berlusconi Initiate Change in Italy?

April 16, 2008 · Filed Under Italian politics · 6 Comments

Just to be annoying, I’ll answer the question above with another question:

Would you, if you had made billions on the back of a system that potentially allows you to get away with just about anything, be interested in changing that system?

To sum up the words of a recent article in The Economist: It’s possible (isn’t anything?), but unlikely.

Thanks to Rob over at Wind Rose Hotel for bringing the article to my attention, and for an Italian opinion on the significance of the recent Italian election results, check out his latest post:
