America and UK the violent

I followed in absolute horror what went on in the US the other day. The massacre had a more profound effect on me than the almost daily stories of human beings treating other human beings in a million and one dire ways. I was affected by the tragedy in Virginia because I have a child and the thoughts of my child either a) getting so down that he would want to kill people b)having my child killed in such a way, just plain frighten me. I also feel very sorry for all those parents who lost children in this sad and fruitless waste of young life.

If you have ever been over here, you may have noticed how many shops have metal shutters which are lowered when the shop is closed. These here shutters, often grey, tend to give the town something of an abandoned look. I am not the only one to have noticed this. Some enterprising, possibly ex-graffiti, artists have been brightening things up. I’ve been meaning to post a few photos and so here they are:

Still got a few spots and what may become little scars. The scars I’ll add to the collection I’ve amassed as a result of falling off bikes, crashing cars, being bitten by dogs, and playing with knives.

One of my students; and I deal with the less advanced levels; managed to land what could well be the job of this person’s dreams. This person attended two interviews and spoke in English in both of them. I should also mention that my student also happened to have just about the perfect CV for the position offered, but this student told me that my English course had helped more than a little. This student was chuffed and I was very pleased too.

Berlusco

At the risk of angering my Italian readers, I going to say something almost in support of Italy’s tanned tycoon Berlusconi. Why would I do such a thing? Well, mainly because he is the only person who has managed to keep one Italian government in power for a full term since the Second Word War. That is some achievement in my book.

By gum it was hot today. It felt more like June than April. I’ve even dug out my linen clothes.

Chinatown - Milan style
2007 | Filed Under Italy, Milan | 5 Comments
As I have mentioned before, I live on the edge of the area of Milan which is known as the Milanese Chinatown. Apart from the invasion of Chinese run wholesale clothing and shoe shops, the area is usually quiet and the Chinese population keeps very much to itself. Until yesterday.
